Description
The MP-81 sofa by Percival Lafer, designed in the 1970s, is an exceptional and incredibly rare two-seater example of Brazilian mid-century modern design – nearly all surviving pieces are either lounge chairs or three-seater sofas. Upholstered in original dark brown leather and set on a sculptural jacaranda wood base, this sofa exemplifies Lafer’s meticulous approach to ergonomics, comfort, and technical craftsmanship. Its construction features a solid internal frame supporting a continuous seat and backrest, while molded fiberglass shells are joined into a single rigid element, combining strength with a seamless aesthetic.
The leather upholstery delivers both comfort and long-term durability. The solid wood feet are mechanically attached and designed for easy disassembly, reflecting Lafer’s focus on efficient production and transportability. Technically sophisticated and materially refined, this rare MP-81 two-seater stands as a striking testament to Lafer’s lasting impact on Brazilian modern furniture design.
